
How to Relight Pilot Light on a Water Heater

A cold shower is often the first sign that your gas water heater’s pilot light has gone out. Knowing how to relight pilot light safely can restore hot water quickly, but only when the heater is otherwise operating normally and there is no sign of a gas leak. If you smell gas, hear hissing near the unit, or feel unsure at any point, stop and call a qualified professional.
Start With a Quick Safety Check
Before touching the water heater controls, look and listen. Do not attempt to light a pilot if you smell natural gas, which is often described as a sulfur or rotten-egg odor. Leave the area immediately, avoid switches, appliances, phones, flames, and anything that could create a spark. Once you are safely away from the home, contact your gas utility or emergency services as appropriate.
If there is no gas odor, make sure the area around the water heater is clear. Stored paint, gasoline, cleaners, boxes, and laundry can create a fire hazard or restrict the air a gas appliance needs for combustion. Next, check the water heater’s status. A standing pilot system has a small, continuously burning flame behind an access panel near the bottom of the tank. Many newer gas water heaters use electronic ignition instead. If your heater has a digital display, power switch, or no pilot-light viewing window, it may not have a pilot that you can manually relight.
Your water heater’s instruction label is the final authority. It is usually attached to the outside of the tank and gives the lighting procedure for that specific model. Follow it if any instruction differs from the general steps below.
How to Relight Pilot Light on a Gas Water Heater
Most conventional gas water heaters have a temperature-control valve with settings such as OFF, PILOT, and ON, plus an igniter button. The process is straightforward, but patience matters.
1. Turn the control to OFF and wait
Turn the gas control knob to OFF. If the knob will not turn easily, do not force it. Wait at least five minutes before proceeding. This pause gives any residual gas time to clear from the combustion chamber.
Use that time to check for gas odor again. If you smell gas after waiting, do not continue. Turn away from the heater and arrange professional help.
2. Locate the pilot and igniter
Open the outer access door at the bottom of the heater if your unit has one. Some models also have an inner viewing door or a small sight glass. Look for the pilot assembly and the igniter button, which is commonly black, red, or gray and may be located on the control valve.
Do not try to light the pilot with a match, lighter, or torch unless your manufacturer’s label specifically instructs you to do so. Most modern residential water heaters are designed to be lit with their built-in piezo igniter.
3. Set the dial to PILOT
Turn the control knob from OFF to PILOT. On many models, you will need to press and hold the knob down to allow gas to flow to the pilot burner. Some heaters use a separate pilot button instead.
Keep the knob or button depressed while you press the igniter. You may hear a click each time the igniter creates a spark. Look through the sight glass for a small blue flame. On some units, a flashing status light changes pattern once the pilot is lit.
4. Hold the control long enough
Once you see the pilot flame, continue holding the knob or pilot button down for 30 to 60 seconds. This heats the thermocouple or flame sensor, the safety component that confirms a flame is present.
Release the control slowly. If the flame remains lit, turn the dial to ON and set the temperature to your normal preferred setting. For many households, around 120 degrees Fahrenheit provides comfortable hot water while reducing scald risk and unnecessary energy use.
Replace any access panels and give the heater time to recover. Depending on tank size, incoming water temperature, and how much hot water was used, a full tank can take 30 minutes to an hour or more to heat.
If the Pilot Will Not Stay Lit
A pilot that lights but dies as soon as you release the button is not simply being stubborn. It often points to a failed or dirty thermocouple, a weak flame sensor signal, a pilot assembly issue, or a problem with the gas control valve. Repeatedly trying the same lighting sequence will not correct those underlying problems.
A pilot that will not light at all can have several causes. The igniter may not be sparking, the pilot opening may be blocked by dust or debris, the gas supply could be interrupted, or the water heater may have activated a safety feature. Modern FVIR water heaters, designed to prevent flammable-vapor ignition, can shut down when airflow or combustion conditions are not right.
Check whether other gas appliances in the home are working, but do not disassemble gas piping, bypass safety switches, or attempt to clean internal burner parts without proper training. A repair that seems minor can become a carbon monoxide or fire risk when parts are reassembled incorrectly.
A Few Signs It Is Time to Stop Troubleshooting
Call for professional water heater service if the pilot will not stay lit after one or two careful attempts, the burner flame is yellow or irregular, the unit makes popping or rumbling sounds, or you see water around the base of the tank. Rust on the tank, soot near the burner area, and hot water with a strong metallic smell also deserve attention.
Age matters, too. A standard tank-style water heater commonly lasts about 8 to 12 years, although local water conditions, maintenance history, and installation quality can shorten or extend that range. If an older unit needs frequent relighting or repairs, replacement may be the more dependable and cost-effective choice.

Prevent Another Pilot-Light Problem
Not every extinguished pilot is preventable. Strong drafts, temporary gas interruptions, and aging parts can happen. Keep the space around the heater open, avoid blocking combustion-air openings, and do not use the water heater closet as a storage area.
