The anode rod is a long metal rod installed through the top of most tank-style water heaters. It is often called a sacrificial anode because it is designed to corrode first, drawing corrosive elements in the water away from the steel tank. Once the rod is depleted, the tank becomes the next available target. Replacing a worn rod can add useful life to a water heater, but timing matters.

What Does an Anode Rod Do?

Most water heater tanks have a glass lining, but that lining is not flawless. Tiny cracks, seams, and fittings can expose steel to water over time. The anode rod helps slow down that corrosion by sacrificing itself instead.
